Overview

Learn traditional First Nations weaving techniques while creating your own bangle or mini basket with THREADLINES exhibition artists

Join us for THREADLINES at the Art Space gallery during July and learn the art of weaving in a hands-on experience with exhibiting artists Ngaire Pakai (Wiradjuri and Māori) and Jodie Dowd (Noongar Menang, Ballardong, Gitja, Wangai).

Connect with First Nations culture and learn traditional weaving methods to create your own bangle or mini basket.

Whether you are a seasoned artist or novice, these workshops provide a welcoming space to learn, create, and celebrate First Nations culture and heritage.

These workshops are suitable for adults and youth aged 12+ when accompanied by an adult.


About the artists

Jodie Dowd
Noongar (Menang, Gitja, Wangai, Ballardong)
Living on Gaimaragal Country and working on Cammeraygal Country

Jodie Dowd is a Noongar basket weaver, curator, and consultant belonging to the Menang, Gitja, Ballardong and Wangai nations of Noongar boodjar (Western Australia). Born and raised on Gunai/Kurnai Country in southeast Australia, Jodie was taught to weave by Noongar and Gunai/Kurnai Elders as a child and has been weaving all of her life. In 2020 Jodie was given permission from her Elders to share her knowledge of weaving with children, women, community members and the general public.

Ngaire Pakai
Wiradjuri and Māori
Living and working between Dubbo (Wiradjuri Country) and Newcastle (Awabakal Country)

Ngaire Pakai works across a range of mediums, with a strong focus on Aboriginal weaving. Her practice explores storytelling through material and process, using weaving and contemporary artmaking as a way to connect with culture and community. Ngaire’s work is bold, meticulous and layered, reflecting both cultural knowledge and personal narrative. Through weaving and installation, she creates works that carry story, identity and connection to Country.
